I am adding a new feature to my blog! I will post, once a week, a “Let’s Get Practical” kind of recipe. Think of all the things you buy that are really good, but you could just as easily make at home. One of those kind of things for our family is instant oatmeal. Oh, MY!! It is soooo good. (Especially Quaker’s Maple Brown Sugar instant oatmeal!) I decided to look it up and find out just what I could do to replicate it. I found a wonderful little site that did just that. Of course we make it in bulk, but you could make little baggies of it and have it on hand for whenever! Here is the link: http://www.tammysrecipes.com/homemade_instant_oatmeal_packets
Basic Recipe for Instant Oatmeal:
by tammysrecipes.com
2 cups quick-cooking oats, pulsed slightly in food processor
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sweetener (dry — like sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, sucanat, etc.)
1/2 cup powdered (dry nonfat) milk
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container or bag.
To prepare oatmeal: Mix 2/3 cup of dry mixture with 1 cup boiling water in a bowl, stirring to remove lumps. Let stand 1-2 minutes and serve.
Variations:
Cinnamon Raisin Oatmeal
Basic recipe (above, using brown sugar) plus:
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
Strawberries and Cream Oatmeal (My Favorite)
Basic recipe (above) plus:
1/4 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1/2 cup freeze-dried strawberries
Blueberry Oatmeal
Basic recipe (above) plus:
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup dried blueberries
Still wondering how good this actually is? Well, I made this the night before we were going to eat it for lunch, and I had a hard time not “taste-testing” the whole bowl when I was done photographing it. 🙂 My friends the S’s said they really liked it too! So I say go for it!
