I have been asked by a few of you about birthdays at our house. Yes, there are twelve of us, so a lot of parties. Funny thing is, that there are seven “summer birthdays.” We have grown to call the May-July months the “Big Summer Birthday Bash!” Our bash started two weeks ago and we had two parties in that time frame. We also have a birthday next week, not to mention our relatives and friends. Whew! Sometimes I wonder how much cake I consume….never mind…let’s not go there. 🙂
Okay, about this owl cake. I made it for my sister’s birthday. Cissy turned 14 last week and she is a total girl. She knows all about style, nail polish, fedoras, and all those really long necklaces with the charms on the bottom. I wanted to make her a cute, stylish, girly cake and came across an image of an owl cake. Bingo! I thought it was the perfect cake, fitting all of my criteria’s. It helps too, that owls are the height of fashion right now.
Not much of a recipe to share guys, but I will walk you through the instructions!
Instructions:
1.) I used for the actual cake I used my DIY Yellow Cake Mix. Which, if I might add, worked really, really well! Find out how to make it here.
2.) Crumb coat the two layered 9″ cakes and put it in the freezer to seal on the frosting and crumbs.
3.) Coat the cake with a second layer. (I used pink!)
4.) Put on the Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Cream Pies, with dabs of white frosting on each, for the eyes. Then add peppermint patties for the pupils.
5.) Make/buy rolled fondant and shape the beak, eyelashes, ears, and bow. If you google: “Marshmallow Fondant Recipe+blog” you will get excellent resources for fondant tutorials.
6.) Use M&M’s for the feet.
Enjoy!!

So sweet! Happy birthday to Cissy! I love how pink that frosting is, and you made a darling cake, Kloe.
Thanks! I will tell Cissy you said Happy Birthday. I loved the shade of pink too! I just dropped a tiny drop of red food dye in my white buttercream frosting. 🙂 Have a great day, Ngan.
I love it! I wish I had such a big family, I could celebrate a birthday every week 😉
Your owl looks amazing! So beautiful 🙂 And indeed, owls are super fashion :p
Oh and I love the fact that you have Summer Birthday Bashes 😀
Thanks Sarah! I loved making it. How many are in your family? Haha! Yeah, my older sister came up with that title and it really stuck! 🙂
I’m an only child and if I count every member of my closets family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and my parents) that would make 21 xD
Well, your sister came up with a great title!
Wow! I could never imagine living alone….I will someday of course though. Most of our relatives live out of town, but things never get dull here that is for sure.
I’m quite used to be the only child here :p I had a lot of kids from the same age living in my street 🙂 My family doesn’t live in the same toen either. My grandparents live in the town next to ours so that’s nice 🙂
Seven summer birthdays! Such an exciting time!! The cake is absolutely beautiful (and adorable). I hope Cissy had a wonderful birthday as well. 🙂

Way cool cake Kloe! That lucky sis. We too have summer birthday bash in our family, scattered as we are. My niece is all of the things you described about your sister. Maybe she will get an owl too. You should turn her onto Bill Cunningham fashion photographer (my 13 year old fashionista niece loves him too).
Glad you liked it! Sounds like your niece and my sister would hit it off! They should meet each other! LOL! (as she would say)
